Culture Magazine uutisoi Michael J. Fox -säätiön (MJFF) kannattavan lääkekannabistutkimusten runsasta lisäämistä. Lisäksi säätiö tukee kolmea lääkekannabistutkimuksia helpottavaa lakialoitetta:
- “The Medical Cannabis Research Act of 2019” -aloite lisäisi läpi mennessään keinoja pääosin Parkinsonin tautia koskeville kannabistutkimuksille.
- “VA Medical Cannabis Research Act of 2019” puolestaan mahdollistaisi enemmän lääkekannabista veteraaneille.
- “The Expanding Cannabis Research and Information Act” uudelleenluokittelisi kannabiksen uudelleen liittovaltion tasolla.
Viime vuonna Michael J. Fox -säätiö lähetti kirjeen Yhdysvaltojen elintarvike- ja lääkevirasto FDA:lle (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) ehdottaen hallitukselle kannabiksen uudelleenluokittelua. Viime kesäkuussa MJFF lähetti uuden kirjeen FDA:lle, ehdottaen kannabisluokitusten maailmanlaajuista uudistusta Maailman terveysjärjestö WHO:n (World Health Organization) kautta.
Vaikka kannabis on laillistettu useissa osavaltioissa sekä viihde- että lääkekäytössä, kasvilla on vieläkin liittovaltion Schedule I -luokitus, jonka mukaan sillä ei ole mitään lääkinnällistä käyttöä mutta sen väärinkäyttöpotentiaali on suuri.
Fox itse puhuu lääkekannabiksesta julkisuudessa harvemmin, mutta on osoittanut kannatusta kasvin uudelleenluokittelulle.
Michael J. Foxin Parkinsonin tauti diagnosoitiin vuonna 1991, jolloin hän oli vasta 29-vuotias ja suosittu Hollywood-näyttelijä. Vuonna 2000 Fox luopui näyttelemisestä oireiden pahentuessa. Hänet tunnetaan parhaiten 80-luvun Paluu tulevaisuuteen -elokuvatrilogiasta, jossa hän oli pääosassa.
